About This Tool
A free educational Social Security benefits estimator
Our Mission
The American Social Security Calculator was built with one purpose: to help working Americans get a fast, free, no-signup estimate of their potential Social Security retirement benefit before they make a major claiming decision.
Choosing when to claim Social Security is one of the largest financial decisions most Americans will make. The difference between claiming at 62 vs. 70 can exceed $400,000 in lifetime benefits — yet most people never see a clear comparison until they dig into the SSA website. Our tool puts that comparison in front of you in seconds.
How It Works
We use the same three-tier formula the SSA publishes for 2026: 90% of the first $1,174 of Average Indexed Monthly Earnings (AIME), 32% of AIME between $1,174 and $7,078, and 15% of AIME above $7,078. The result is your Primary Insurance Amount (PIA) — your benefit at Full Retirement Age. We then adjust for early claiming (age 62: ~30% reduction) or delayed claiming (age 70: ~24% increase).
